IOA Complex Residents
The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) has gained national and international renown for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs and the scope of its research contributions. It is proud to provide a unique combination of resources focused on Latin America, including the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, the Center for U.S. Mexican Studies, the Division of Global Public Health and the Institute of the Americas which are housed together in one complex on the UC San Diego campus. In addition to their core functions, each of the organizations offer numerous programs of speakers, exhibitions, film shows and other events open to the public. In an effort to provide greater clarification on the role and activities of each of the institutions mentioned, we have developed a description of each of the institutions mentioned above.
About the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS)
Through the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, the University of California, San Diego provides one of the most prominent programs for the study of Latin America in the United States. In addition to offering Latin American curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate level, the Latin American program at UC San Diego has distinctive characteristics. It has over eighty full-time Latin American specialists on faculty, the deliberate integration of teaching, research, and policy analysis, the promotion of interdisciplinary perspectives, and active collaboration with colleagues, students, and leaders from Latin America.
About the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (USMEX)
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies is a campus-wide research unit of the University of California, San Diego and has become the premier institute for social science research on Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations in the United States. The Center participates in and promotes multidisciplinary research relevant to current policy issues in Mexico and to the bi-national relationship in close collaboration with scientists at Mexican institutions. In addition, the Center’s supports comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component. The Center is supported by UC San Diego’s Office of Research and School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, and the UC Office of the President.
About the Division of Global Public Health
The mission of the Division of Global Public Health is to increase awareness, skills and research capacity relating to global health issues through educational activities directed to faculty, students, fellows and the community. We conduct high-caliber research on health-related issues and service utilization facing populations in international settings, U.S. minorities and migrants to the U.S. We provide opportunities for students to experience clinical and research activities in international settings and diverse communities. Global Health will initiate, participate and foster collaborations on international health activities within and between departments in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, the general UC San Diego campus, organized research units, and U.S.-based and international agencies and institutions. In addition, we offer advice and consultation on international health topics as needed by local, regional, national and international organizations.
About the Institute of the Americas (IOA)
The Institute of the Americas has built a twenty-five year history as a promoter of informed discussion and debate about public policies designed to enhance democratic development, regional integration, and economic growth with equity in the western hemisphere. At conferences, private roundtables and seminars organized throughout Latin America and the United States, government officials, private sector executives and representatives of non-governmental, multilateral and regional organizations exchange views on pressing contemporary economic and social issues. An autonomous, private, not-for-profit organization located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego the Institute is governed by a multinational Board of Directors.
