IOA Complex Residents

Resident Institutions of the Institute of the Americas Complex

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has gained national and international renown for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs and the scope of its research contributions. It is proud to provide a unique combination of resources focused on Latin America, including the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, the Center for U.S. Mexican Studies and the Institute of the Americas which are housed together in one complex on the UCSD campus. In addition to their core functions, each of the organizations offer numerous programs of speakers, exhibitions, film shows and other events open to the public. In an effort to provide greater clarification on the role and activities of each of the institutions mentioned, we have developed a description of each of the institutions mentioned above.

About the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS)

Through the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) provides one of the most prominent programs for the study of Latin America in the United States. In addition to offering Latin American curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate level, the Latin American program at UCSD has distinctive characteristics. It has over eighty full-time Latin American specialists on faculty, the deliberate integration of teaching, research, and policy analysis, the promotion of interdisciplinary perspectives, and active collaboration with colleagues, students, and leaders from Latin America.

About the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (CUSMEX)

The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies is a campus-wide research unit of the University of California, San Diego. With the support of UCSD’s Office of Research and the University of California Office of the President, the Center has become the premier institute for social science research on Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations in the United States. The Center participates in and promotes multidisciplinary research relevant to current policy issues in Mexico and to the bi-national relationship in close collaboration with scientists at Mexican institutions. In addition, most of the Center's research involves comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component.

About the Institute of the Americas (IOA)

The Institute of the Americas has built a twenty-five year history as a promoter of informed discussion and debate about public policies designed to enhance democratic development, regional integration, and economic growth with equity in the western hemisphere. At conferences, private roundtables and seminars organized throughout Latin America and the United States, government officials, private sector executives and representatives of non-governmental, multilateral and regional organizations exchange views on pressing contemporary economic and social issues. An autonomous, private, not-for-profit organization located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego the Institute is governed by a multinational Board of Directors.
