Current Project

Immigrant Context and the Political Views of Native Born Americans

Publications

Hajnal has published in the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Politics, Public Opinion Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, and numerous other journals and edited volumes.  He recently completed a book with Cambridge University Press entitled, Changing White Attitudes Toward Black Political Leadership, that outlines the impact of black mayoral leadership on white racial attitudes and voting behavior. He has received numerous honors for his research and writing including the Best Paper in Urban Politics Award at the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association.  Dr. Hajnal is also currently working on two other book projects.  The first examines the effects of uneven voter turnout on minority representation. The second recounts the different ways African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and white American choose their partisanship.

Academic Background

Hajnal earned his Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago and his B.S. in Geophysics from Yale University. After receiving his Ph.D. degree, Dr. Hajnal was a research fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Brandeis University. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at UCSD.
