Crafting Courts in New Democracies: The Politics of Subnational Judicial Reform in Brazil and Mexico

Publications

Ingram completed a dissertation (August 2009) on subnational judicial reform in Brazil and Mexico since 1985. The dissertation drew on a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to develop a historical-institutional account of institutional change in state courts in Latin America’s two largest democracies. During his tenure at the Center, Ingram will be working on revising the dissertation for a book manuscript, publishing individual chapters as articles, and related lines of research raised but not fully developed in the dissertation.

Academic Background

Ingram holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and a law degree (J.D.) from the University of New Mexico, and a B.A. (1993) from Pomona College. His dissertation was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Fulbright Commission. Ingram was born and raised in Mexico and speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese. His comparative and interdisciplinary research in politics and law seeks a better understanding of the sources of strong institutions, state building, and democracy.
