ACADEMIC MODULES
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies immerses participants in the analysis of U.S. political and economic history, the conduct of U.S. government, and the making of U.S. economic and foreign policy. The 2006 Summer Seminar will include a special emphasis on U.S. elections and political campaigns. It will be organized around four academic modules.
Politics, Government, and the Judiciary. Examines the presidency, the congress, the judicial system, and state and local politics. New for 2006, this module will include sessions on the structure of U.S. political parties, the organization of U.S. elections, and strategies for U.S. electoral campaigns at the national and state level. Participants will meet with elected politicians from the U.S. Congress and the California State Legislature and with campaign strategists involved in national and state elections to be held in 2006.
Economic Policy. Examines U.S. economic history, monetary and fiscal policy, international economic policy, and immigration policy. This module will include sessions on how the U.S. resolves international trade disputes, how U.S. budget policies affect the global macroeconomy, and how U.S. immigration policy has evolved over time. Participants will visit the Mexico-U.S. border to examine operations by the U.S. Border Patrol.
Foreign Policy and National Security. Examines the making of U.S. foreign policy and U.S. security policy. This module will include sessions on U.S. policy in the Middle East, U.S. relations with Asia and Latin America, U.S. efforts to spread democracy abroad, and the role of free trade agreements in U.S foreign policy. Participants will have discussions with current and former high-ranking U.S. government officials.
Public Policy. Examines U.S. policies regarding education, health, social welfare, and the environment. New for 2006, this module will include sessions on the nature of U.S. welfare policies, the structure of U.S. public education, and the delivery of U.S. public health care. Participants will visit a San Diego public school and meet with local government officials.
Other details regarding the Seminar:
Instruction. The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is taught by a faculty of experts on the United States, including scholars from UCSD and public officials from the U.S. federal government and California state government. The faculty selects readings for class meetings and leads class discussions. Participants complete a group project on a current aspect of U.S. policy.
Daily Schedule. The typical week involves two class meetings a day, Monday through Thursday, off-campus visits on Friday, and round-table discussions on U.S. policy issues two nights during the week. Weekends are reserved for cultural activities in Southern California.
