Overview
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is a four-week program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for young professionals from Asia and Latin America who want to deepen their understanding of the United States. Taught by distinguished scholars and practitioners, the Summer Seminar immerses participants in the analysis of U.S. political and economic history, the conduct of U.S. government, the making of U.S. economic and foreign policy, U.S. political parties and elections, and U.S. mass media. The program offers the unique opportunity for individuals from across the Pacific Rim to learn about the United States by exchanging ideas with internationally renowned faculty and with each other.
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is run jointly by UCSD’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS). Since its inauguration in 1989, over 400 individuals have participated in the program. Graduates of seventeen Summer Seminars now occupy faculty positions in U.S. studies programs in over a dozen countries. Others hold key positions in government, diplomacy, business, private research institutions, mass media, political parties, and nongovernmental organizations. Numerous graduates have continued their higher education by gaining admission to advanced-degree programs at major U.S. and European universities.
The Pac Rim Summer Seminar is taught by a faculty of experts on the United States. At UCSD, participating faculty come from the departments of Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as IR/PS. Seminar faculty also includes individuals with extensive experience in government, politics, the judiciary, and business. Funding for the Seminar is provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, individual donations, and government entities in Mexico.
In order to promote close interaction between lecturers and participants, admission to the Seminar is limited to approximately 25 individuals. All lectures and classroom discussions are conducted in English. The Seminar is targeted towards young professionals from Asia and Latin America working in the public, private, or non-governmental sectors who show exceptional promise in their career trajectories. The cost of the program is $6,000, which covers tuition, educational materials, food, lodging, and health insurance. A limited number of scholarships are available for eligible participants. We encourage applications for a place in the 2007 Pac Rim Summer Seminar. The program offers an ideal environment in which to enhance one's understanding of the United States, as well as an opportunity to develop long-lasting collaborative relationships with counterparts from Asia and Latin America.
