Visiting Fellows Program
2006-2007 Competition
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for Research Fellowships and non-stipend Guest Scholar affiliations for the 2006-2007 academic year. The Center’s Visiting Fellows Program is the largest residential fellowship program in the United States for research on Mexico. Each year the program brings together scholars from the social sciences, history, and related fields. The majority of Research Fellows and Guest Scholars are expected to be at the postdoctoral level. PhD candidates who are ABD and have completed a substantial portion of their dissertations will also be considered. Senior scholars are encouraged to apply. Researchers of any nationality are eligible. Applicants may apply for stays of between 3 and 10 months in duration. Fellowship stipends are commensurate with experience and academic rank.
Awards support research on any aspect of contemporary Mexico, Mexican history, and U.S.-Mexican relations. Comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component are especially encouraged. The Center also encourages proposals from groups of two or more scholars working on a common project. Additional funding may be available to groups for workshops or short-term visits by other scholars relevant to the project area.
Special funds are available for individuals who are (1) Mexican citizens, or (2) advanced graduate students, recent PhD recipients, or faculty from any campus of the University of California system. The Center currently has two in-house projects with funds earmarked for research fellowships—on rural financial markets and rural development, and on public health and HIV/AIDS policy in Mexico. Applications are not, of course, restricted to these topics.
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies is an organized research unit of UCSD dedicated to research on Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations. The Center’s programs include an active visiting scholars program, an annual Summer Seminar in U.S. Studies, research projects related to policy and policymaking in Mexico, and a series of conferences and workshops.
