Visiting Fellows Program
2009-2010 Competition
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for research fellowships and non-stipendiary Guest Scholar affiliations for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The Center’s Visiting Fellows Program is the largest residential fellowship program in the United States for research on Mexico. Each year the program brings together scholars from the social sciences, history, and related fields. The Center's current research interests focus on economic development and social policy. Specific issues include regional divergence and inequality; infrastructure and public goods; local government accountability, corruption, and civil society; social insurance and poverty alleviation.
The majority of Visiting Fellows and Guest Scholars are expected to be at the postdoctoral level. PhD candidates who are ABD and have completed a substantial portion of their dissertations will also be considered. Senior scholars are encouraged to apply. The majority of the fellowship awards are for residential periods between 4 and 10 months in duration. Stipends are commensurate with experience and academic rank.
Awards support research on any aspect of contemporary Mexico, Mexican history, and U.S.-Mexican relations. Comparative studies with a substantial Mexico component are especially encouraged. The Center also encourages proposals from groups of two or more scholars working on a common project. Additional funding may be available for workshops or short-term visits by other scholars relevant to the project area.
The majority of the funds are earmarked for individuals who are (1) Mexican citizens, (2) residents of Mexico of any nationality, or (3) advanced graduate students, recent PhD recipients, or faculty from any campus of the University of California system.
In addition to the Visiting Scholars program, the Center’s activities include research projects related to policy and policymaking in Mexico, conferences and workshops, and a weekly series of research seminars.
